In 1972 the Board of Directors had created an Order of the Pelican to reward those who did great service unto the Society. Initially the order was call the Imperial Order of the Pelican and was given directly by the Board of Directors. In August 1974 (A.S. IX) King William of Hoghton created the West Kingdom Order of the Pelican, and created Stefan de Lorraine principal of that order. By 1976 the Board of Directors had ceased awarding the imperial version, leaving it’s administration to the Kingdoms.
The principal of the Order of the Pelican of Meridies is Mistress Rebecca of Tywyn the Demanding, elevated on June 25, 1977 (A.S. XII) by Prince John the Bearkiller and Princess Kassandra of the Principality of Meridies. The first pelican created by the Kingdom of Merdies was Mistress Rondallynn of Golgotha, elevated on July 14, 1978 (A.S. XIII) by King John the Bearkiller. Upon the release of the order to the Kingdom, persons who were elevated to the Order of the Laurel for service were allowed to convert their Laurel to a Pelican. Mistress Margarethe the Dog (OL, 9/13/1975)was the only Meridian to take advantage of this offer on 8/13/1977.
Members of the Order of the Pelican strive to attain a standard of service which is above and beyond that normally expected of members of the Society. They are charged with setting an example of courtesy and chivalrous conduct, respecting the Crown of the kingdom; to support and uphold the Laws of the kingdom and Corpora, (if in fealty) supporting and upholding the Crown of his or her kingdom, enriching the kingdom by sharing his or her knowledge and skills, and advising the Crown on the advancement of candidates for the Pelican.
Members of the Order are addressed as Master or Mistress (or they can use an Alternate Title that matches their persona if they so wish) and can display the regalia of the Order. The symbol for the Order is a Pelican in her piety. It shows a mother Pelican piercing her breast to feed her children. Members of the Order are allowed to wear a Cap of Maintenance, which is a red hat with ermine fur trim.
